Mission

Piccolo Bass is a school outreach programme based in Wellington. Our team encourages the highest level of music making in a secure, creative and supportive environment. Our students have access to high quality instruments and lessons with internationally acclaimed music teachers. We partner with schools to promote the double bass and create engaging education and performance opportunities.

Piccolo Bass is supported by the Wellington Music Education Trust (WMET), whose aim is to provide appropriately sized instruments for students. At the moment, there are virtually no small double basses in New Zealand, this means children can only start learning double bass once they're big enough to play a 1/4 size (around 10-12 years old). With WMET providing the instruments, and Piccolo Bass providing the education - we will enable a new generation of talented young New Zealand double bassists to grow and thrive in our diverse Kiwi music scene.

Piccolo Bass was initiated in 2019 after Alanna Jones and Lachlan Radford returned from overseas to settle in Wellington as full-time professional double bassists. Growing up in New Zealand, they were able to participate in iconic New Zealand music education programmes and work with inspiring mentors. Alanna and Lachlan are excited to spark the same sense of enthusiasm and musical empowerment in the next generation.

The Founders ...

Alanna Jones

Alanna teaches all ages and levels but has a particular passion for teaching beginners the double bass. She was a gymnastics coach for seventeen years and has an acute awareness of biomechanics and anatomy. This has inspired an ergonomic approach to teaching the double bass, that allows students to build an efficient and long lasting foundation in their playing.

Lachlan Radford

Lachlan taught in London and was Professor of Double Bass at the Junior Guildhall School of Music & Drama from 2010 - 2018 where he taught students from 6 - 18 years old. With a focus on good technique and enjoyment at the early stages of learning Lachlan’s enthusiasm for passing on his musical experience to a younger generation is helped by his diverse and genre-defying background.
